PUBHLT 0464 - INFECTIOUS DISEASE EMERGENCIES: PREVENTION, PREPAREDNESS, & RESPONSE Minimum Credits: 3 Maximum Credits: 3 This course will introduce students to the strategies for the prevention, preparedness, and response of infectious disease outbreaks and pandemics using a multidisciplinary, global health approach. It will begin with an overview of the causes of infectious disease outbreaks and pandemics and will familiarize students with the fundamentals of the origin and features of pathogens with pandemic potential. Students will then gain insights into the skills needed to prepare and respond to future outbreaks and pandemics through the lens of the lessons learned from previous and current emergencies. The course will look closely at emerging pathogens and their connections with the environment and climate change and discuss the use of a One Health approach to improve preparedness and response efforts for global health security. Students will be introduced to key concepts of integrated disease surveillance for epidemic-prone diseases, public health mitigation strategies, and effective risk communication during outbreaks and pandemics. This course will also examine how outbreaks and pandemics relate to health disparities and discuss local and global strategies to promote health equity during infectious disease emergencies.
