BUSORG 1101 - WORKPLACE COMMUNICATIONS

Minimum Credits: 3
Maximum Credits: 3
Business leaders continue to seek candidates who solve problems with critical thinking, explain solutions to both management and peers, and then face opportunities and challenges with powerfully written documents and confident, convincing presentations. And now there’s even more. Today, executives add: “I want to hire someone who can tell a story with data.” Effective written, oral, and interpersonal skills are expected of you when you enter the business world. Data confirm this. Annual surveys of corporate recruiters indicate that these business communication skills are among the most sought-after in hiring today. The overriding goal of this course, then, is to make you more successful as a candidate, as an employee, and as a professional. In Workplace Communications, you will continue to develop the kinds of communications skills you’ll be expected to use both here at the university and then there, that is, at work for the entirety of your career. You will develop and produce pieces of business writing, practice and deliver oral presentations, learn to lead and follow teammates and give and take constructive criticism. Although you will develop many of these skills independently, you will also get more practice working with others. Early in the term, you will be named to one of six teams that comprise this section of Business Communications. You will work with that team throughout the term. Course Outcomes: To successfully complete the course, you will know and be able to Identify significant forms of current business communication, such as bad news and persuasive and informative messages. Develop greater familiarity with visual and digital communications. Use the conventions of current business etiquette among and between colleagues and clients. Follow directions accurately. Provide and receive a constructive critique of written and presentation work, the foundation of successful interpersonal communications.
