Polymers Concentration

The Polymers concentration is intended to expose give students to the synthesis, physical chemistry, properties, and processing of polymeric materials. For the Chemical Engineering students, the Polymer concentration also serves to expose the students to materials science.

The concentration comprises two lecture courses:

CHE 1754 - PRINCIPLES OF POLYMER ENGINEERNG  is usually taught by a faculty member from the Chemical Engineering department, or sometimes from an industrial scientist. It discusses the basic chemistry of polymers, discussion of the various families of polymers, their structural, thermal, mechanical, and flow characteristics, and a brief introduction to processing.

CHEM 1600 - SYNTHESIS & CHARCTRZTN POLYMERS  is usually taught by a faculty member from the Chemistry department and covers the various methods of synthesizing macromolecules in the lab and industrially, as well as numerous methods of measuring molecular weight and other properties.

The concentration also requires CHEM 1605 , a laboratory course that covers the same material as the CHEM 1600  lecture course, but with the students performing the corresponding experiments.

Finally, the concentration requires the student to conduct independent research, CHE 1097 , in a research topic related to polymer science. The research can be advised by any faculty member within the University.

You must obtain a 2.0 QPA in the sequence to obtain the concentration.

Led by Profs. Sachin Velankar and Tara Meyer.
