Arabic Major

**On 09-03-2024, the following information was updated in the published catalog in an effort to provide accurate information.**

The Arabic major requires a total of 47 credits, including pre-requirements.

Pre-requisites: 4 semesters of the Modern Standard Arabic and a dialect, Egyptian or Levantine (18 credits). Students can test out of pre-requisite courses if they already have knowledge of the language (e.g., via courses at another University).

Modern Standard Arabic Egyptian 1 (ARABIC 0101)   or Modern Standard Arabic Levantine 1 (ARABIC 0121)  5 credits

Modern Standard Arabic Egyptian 2 (ARABIC 0102)   or Modern Standard Arabic Levantine 2 (ARABIC 0122)  5 credits

Modern Standard Arabic Egyptian 3 (ARABIC 0103)   or Modern Standard Arabic Levantine 3 (ARABIC 0123)  4 credits

Modern Standard Arabic Egyptian 4 (ARABIC 0104)   or Modern Standard Arabic Levantine 4 (ARABIC 0124)  4 credits


Complete the following four language courses based on the track chosen (Egyptian or Levantine).

Complete two courses from either Egyptian or Levantine.

ARABIC 0105 - MODERN STANDARD ARABIC 5/EGYPTIAN 5   or ARABIC 0125 - MODERN STANDARD ARABIC 5/LEVANTINE 5  

ARABIC 0106 - MODERN STANDARD ARABIC 6/EGYPTIAN 6   or ARABIC 0126 - MODERN STANDARD ARABIC 6/LEVANTINE 6  

Complete Readings in Arabic.

ARABIC 1115 - READINGS IN ARABIC  

Complete Special Topics in Arabic.

ARABIC 1909 - SPECIAL TOPICS IN ARABIC  


Complete two Core courses.

Complete one culture course.

ARABIC 1615 - ARABIC LIFE AND THOUGHT  

Complete one Literature/Linguistics course.

ARABIC 1635 - INTRODUCTION TO MODERN ARABIC LITERATURE  

ARABIC 1705 - INTRODUCTION TO ARABIC LINGUISTICS  

Complete a Capstone course which also satisfies the Writing requirement.

Arabic major additional information and requirements
  • Each required course for the Arabic major must be completed with a grade of C or better.
  • Please contact the Arabic advisor if:
    • you had taken Arabic related courses in Study abroad or in other school that could count towards the major.
    • there are other courses in Pitt that could count as an elective and are not listed.
    • you have prior knowledge of Arabic and could test out of language classes.
  • No more than six credits can be taken on the Satisfactory/No Credit S/NC grade basis and used towards the Arabic major.
