Engineering Mechanics Concentration

Engineering Mechanics

Engineering Mechanics involves the study of the action of forces on bodies and the resultant motion and deformation. Built on physics and mathematics principles, engineering mechanics is the basis of mechanical sciences that underlies mechanical engineering, materials science and engineering, civil engineering and biomechanics. The curriculum prepares students for engineering practice and electives allow specialization in areas such as structural mechanics, soil mechanics, material science, solid mechanics, biomechanics or dynamics and vibrations. The curriculum culminates with program electives and a two-part senior design experience. The design projects build on the knowledge gained in coursework and involve independent and/or team problem solving under the guidance of a faculty mentor.

Credits: 15

Total Credits: 127

An Upper-Level Physics Elective is a minimum 3-credit physics course with a course number > 1000.

All Humanities and Social Science electives must be selected from the SSOE approved list . Two courses must be from a single area (see SSOE guidelines).

At least one senior design course offered by one of the other SSOE engineering programs is required; the second course may be a senior project arranged with a faculty mentor and taken as ENGSCI 1801 - ENGINEERING DESIGN 1  or ENGR 1050 - PRODUCT REALIZATION . Students wishing to complete a two-term project with a faculty mentor may request approval for the second term to count as a program elective (ENGSCI 1802 - ENGINEERING DESIGN 2 ).
