Sustainability Certificate

Requirements

A total of 18 credits are required to earn a certificate that is structured so that the participating student will be exposed to the interrelation of engineering with natural and social sciences and humanities as applied to sustainable Earth systems, engineering practices, and society. The certificate has two general tracks: one in the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences (DSAS) and the other in the Swanson School of Engineering (SSOE). However, students from outside of these respective schools are able to participate in a track. General guidelines are as follows:

• Each track starts and finishes with two required courses with an ENGR designation in the SSOE. These two courses unite all Sustainability Certificate students regardless of disciplinary or School affiliation. 
• Students will take a third required course that is specific to the track School. 
• Three electives can be chosen to complete the 18-credit requirement.
• At most, only one of these three electives can be taken in a student’s home Department. (For example, an Environmental Science student can only count one course with the GEOL designation as an elective course.)
