Applied Developmental Psychology, BS

The undergraduate major in Applied Developmental Psychology (ADP) emphasizes developing the skills necessary for implementing and evaluating effective programs for children, youth, and families. Course work includes the study of human development, professional issues, program design and evaluation, social-emotional skills, and research methods. The program allows for a focus on Child Life hospital work, group care, family support and intervention, administration, play intervention and therapy, and out-of-school time. Successful completion of the program leads to the Bachelor of Science degree.

The ADP Bachelor of Science program is listed as an academic program to prepare Child Life Specialists by the Child Life Council.

The curriculum is organized into four terms of upper-division (junior and senior year) study. Applications for admission should be submitted during the sophomore year.

 

Eligibility for Major


The B.S. in Applied Developmental Psychology program has the following requirements for entry:

Students need to be in good academic standing and have a cumulative GPA of 2.5. Students must have the planned completion of 30 credits of prerequisite/ADP BS general education courses. 

 

Prerequisite/general education coursework:

  • Language and Literacy Credits / Units: 6

  • ENGCMP 0200 - SEMINAR IN COMPOSITION
  • Any advanced Composition course or any writing course “W”
  •  

    Quantitative and Formal Reasoning (select one) Credits / Units: 3

  • STAT 0200 - BASIC APPLIED STATISTICS
  • STAT 0800 - STATISTICS IN THE MODERN WORLD
  • STAT 1000 - APPLIED STATISTICAL METHODS
  •  

    Creative Expression/Humanities Credits / Units: 6 (Select 6 credits from two different departments listed below):

    • Art - HAA
    • Communication -COMMRC
    • English Literature - ENGLIT
    • Music - MUSIC
    • Philosophy - PHIL
    • Political Science - PS
    • Theater - THEA
  •  

    Introduction to Psychology Credits / Units: 3

  • PSY 0010 - INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY

    International/Non-western culture (e.g. approved courses in AFRCNA, CHIN, JPNSE, PS - areas: Comparative Politics or International Relations & Law, SOC)

Major Requirements


  • Maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA or above in order to remain in and confer the program.
  • Updated yearly clearanes (PA Criminal Record and Child Abuse, FBI Federal Criminal History) and current TB test.
  • 120 credit hours

 

The ADP BS major requires 48 credits of major coursework, and an additional 12 credits of ADP electives.
