Return to: School of Computing and Information
Students enrolled in one of the Bachelor of Science degree programs in the School of Computing and Information can expand their skills, knowledge, and career opportunities be enrolling in the BS/MSIS Accelerated program. Students will earn the BS degree and the MSIS degree in only five years. That’s possible, because 15 credits of pre-approved coursework will count towards both the BS and the MSIS degrees. The 15-credits of shared coursework may include MSIS courses counting as free elective credits in the BS program or advanced undergraduate coursework counting toward the MSIS degree.
Policies
- Students must be enrolled, and in good academic standing, in any of the SCI BS programs (Computational Biology, Computational Social Science, Computer Science, Data Science, Digital Narrative and Interactive Design, Information Science)
- Students must successfully complete all requirements for the undergraduate degree.
- By the start of the Spring term of the junior year, students apply for admission to the accelerated BS/MSIS program.
- Students must successfully complete coursework necessary to meet the admissions criteria for the MSIS program to include required programming, math, and statistics courses.
- In the senior year, students take a series of approved courses that count to both the undergraduate and graduate degrees.
- Then, the fifth year will be spent taking MSIS courses. Note that a minimum of 30 credits of the accelerated program must be at the graduate level (courses numbered 2000 and higher).
- Students must successfully complete any course requirements of the MSIS program to include five (5) Core courses, five (5) INFSCI Elective courses, and two (2) Additional Approved Elective courses (including the 15 credits-of shared BS-MSIS coursework).
- If students choose to follow an Area of Concentration in the MSIS program, it may require more credits or time to earn the degree.
Admissions
- Students who have asked for the Information Science Guarantee (please see http://admissions.pitt.edu/guaranteed-admissions-programs/) are eligible for the accelerated program.
- Students who have not asked for the Information Science Guarantee must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and submit a single letter of reference.
