Certificate in Computational Linguistics

The Certificate in Computational Linguistics aims to train undergraduate students in the interdisciplinary study of computational linguistics, language technologies, and natural language processing, with shared foundational knowledge in Linguistics and Computer Science. It has two tracks: the Linguistics Track intended for Linguistics and language majors & minors in the Dietrich school, and the Computer Science Track designed for Computer Science and other majors in the School of Computing and Information. Students in the Linguistics Track will gain proficiency in computational methods and data skills for linguistic problem solving; those in the CS Track will gain technical proficiency in natural language engineering.
The certificate requires completion of 17-18 credits in courses focused on computational linguistics starting with LING 1330 “Introduction to Linguistics” as the gateway course. In addtion, there are prerequisite courses, 27 credits in total, encompassing foundational courses in both Linguistics and CS, most of which are core courses in Linguistics and CS majors.
Students should first complete LING 1000, LING 1330, and CMPINF 0401, each with a grade of B- or higher, before applying for admission. Students interested in the certificate should contact the Certificate Director, Professor Na-Rae Han (naraehan@pitt.edu)
