The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures offers courses in the language, literature, film, linguistics, and culture of China, Japan, and Korea. In the case of China, the department offers both a major and a minor in Chinese. Course offerings include a full sequence of courses in the modern standard language of China and a variety of offerings in Chinese studies, ranging from introductory to specialized, that illuminate various facets of Chinese civilization. The departmental curriculum for the Chinese major guides students in developing competence in the four skills of the Chinese language, in traditional and modern literature and culture, and in linguistics.
