Sustainability Certificate
|
|
The aim of the Undergraduate Certificate in Sustainability is to provide undergraduates the opportunity to enhance their education by including sustainability in their course of study. This new certificate program in “Sustainability” transcends existing Schools and Departments at the University of Pittsburgh, capitalizes on ongoing Sustainability-growth opportunities in teaching and research at the University of Pittsburgh, and utilizes the framework of the Mascaro Center for Sustainable Innovation (MCSI) to execute the certificate.
The objectives of the Undergraduate Sustainability Certificate are:
- To develop the basic competencies needed by science, engineering, and humanities graduates to contribute quickly and effectively to the development and ultimate use of sustainable technologies, science, and practices in the U.S. and abroad,
- To create opportunities for undergraduates to develop analytical skills and to learn to think critically about sustainability,
- To provide undergraduates the opportunity to seamlessly incorporate sustainability into their course of study, and
- To create a benchmark education program that can serve as a model throughout academia.

Required Courses
A total of 18 credits are required to earn a certificate that is structured so that the participating student will be exposed to the interrelation of engineering with natural and social sciences and humanities as applied to sustainable Earth systems, engineering practices, and society. The certificate has two tracks; one in DSAS, the other in SSOE. Each track starts and finishes with two required courses that have a MCSI designation in the SSOE and includes a third course from the track School. The two new courses will unite all incoming Sustainability certificate students regardless of disciplinary or School affiliation. Three electives can be chosen to complete the 18 credit requirement. At most, one of these three electives can be taken in a student’s home Department.
Electives:
Select three electives. Only one elective can be in the student’s major department.*
