Long Description This “Inside-Out” course brings students from the University of Pittsburgh and a State Correctional Institute together to learn side by side within a detention setting. Designed around principles of dialogue, mutual learning, and social transformation, the course creates a shared space where “inside” and “outside” students engage as peers. Students will critically examine the relationships between individual health, community well-being, and the structural systems that shape them. Using personal reflection, public health frameworks, and shared learning the class will focus on key public health challenges-including substance use, mental health, infectious disease, and chronic illness. Through readings, discussion, and collaborative projects, students will explore how public health has historically responded to these issues and envision more equitable, community-centered approaches to care and wellbeing.
