What is at stake in the teaching of writing? This course explores theoretical and practical questions about how we understand writing as a practice and how those understandings shape the way it is taught. Students will engage with foundational and contemporary debates in composition studies, literacy theory, and writing pedagogy, examining how different theories of writing give rise to different approaches to instruction. The work of the class is analytical, inventive, and experimental: students will not only study theories and pedagogies but will also create imaginative responses to them, considering how teachers might translate theoretical understandings about literacy and writing into meaningful classroom practice. This course is especially appropriate for students interested in careers in teaching, writing center work, or other educational contexts.
