ANTH 1602 - THE HUMAN SKELETON Minimum Credits: 4 Maximum Credits: 4 The human skeleton provides a range of information about individuals, such as their lived experiences, activity level, and health. The extraction of this information rests on the understanding of the dynamic biology of bone and its many functions, and the identification of skeletal elements and fragments. This course in human osteology includes lecture and lab components to facilitate student understanding of bone biology and morphology. Real and cast bone is used in the lab. In this course, participants learn: bone biology and histomorphology - cellular and macro levels; the function of bone; processes of bone and dental development, growth, and senescence; and the basics of bone biomechanics. Students also learn how to identify complete bones and teeth and their distinguishing features and landmarks. Students apply knowledge of complete adult bones to identify bone fragments and child bones. This course is foundational for students considering anthropological careers in forensic anthropology, bioarchaeology, paleontology and paleopathology, as well as students pursuing careers in health sciences, medicine, biomechanics and biology.
