BIOENG 2241 - SOCTL, POL & ETHCL ISS BIOTEC Minimum Credits: 3 Maximum Credits: 3 As professionals who will ultimately contribute to research on and design of biomedical processes and devices, students should understand that ethical dilemmas are part of the design process-not separate from it. Students in the course will be presented with a combination of case-based discussion, guest and instructor lectures, small group exercises and a final presentation and paper analyzing a bioengineering focused ethical dilemma. At the end of this course, our goal is that students will be able to identify, analyze, and resolve the ethical dilemmas that arise in a professional bioengineering career. An overarching goal is to enable students to become “comfortable talking about the uncomfortable”. Course topics include, but are not limited to research ethics, regulatory considerations of bioengineering projects, stakeholder analysis, ethical approaches, professional standards, and codes of ethics relevant to the profession.
