Requirements for Certificates

Graduate students complete six courses (18 credits) in a global thematic concentration, successfully demonstrate proficiency in a second language, and write a research paper on a global topic.

The graduate certificate offers six thematic concentrations:

  • Sustainable Development
  • Economy and Global Governance
  • Changing Identities in a Global World
  • Conflict and Conflict Resolution
  • Global Health
  • Communication, Technology, and Society

Students take six courses developing a cohesive program of study based on their chosen thematic concentration. Students must also demonstrate proficiency in at least one foreign language. Global Studies offers scholarships for students to pursue the study of less commonly taught languages at Pitt, if they enter the program having studied a commonly taught language as an undergraduate.
