The Master of Education in Combined Applied Studies in Education is within the Department of Teaching, Leading and Learning (TLL) in the School of Education. This degreeserves as the fifth year of the CASE program after completing the related B.S.; students come away from this program with expertise in general education and special education methods, as well as knowledge of practice-focused educational research methods. They are also eligible for both General Educuation PK-4 and Special Education PK-12 certification in PA. This degree is only available to those who complete the CASE B.S. major at the Pittsburgh campus of the University of Pittsburgh. Teacher certifications cannot be obtained until the completion of this graduate year of study.

Certification
Students are eligible for both General Educuation PK-4 and Special Education PK-12 certification in Pennsylvania through the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
Admissions Requirements
- Completion of the CASE undergraduate major at the University of Pittsburgh
- An undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher (state requirement)
- US citizen or green card required for PA teacher certification (this is a state policy)
GPA & Grade Requirements
Students must earn a 3.0 GPA in their graduate coursework in order to complete the degree. Students who do not maintain the 3.0 GPA will be placed on Academic Notice and not allowed to enroll or participate in field-based experiences.
All classes that are not directly field-related (ie: student teaching placements and related seminars) must be taken for a letter grade.
Educational Research Coursework
These classes are focused on providing students with a background in practice-focused educational research methodology.
Methods Coursework
These classes are focused on providing students with the methods and approaches best suited for teaching in early elementary and special education classrooms.
Field-Based Experiences
These classes are the credit-bearing coursework for students’ pre-student teaching and student teaching experiences, and the placement-related seminar course.
Comprehensive Requirement
Students are required to complete a comprehensive exam to complete the M.Ed. program.
Graduation Requirements
- Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Successful completion of all coursework
- Successful completion of comprehensive exam
