Bioethics, Certificate

Graduate Certificate in Bioethics

The Graduate Certificate in Bioethics provides broad interdisciplinary background in the core concepts, methods, and topics in bioethics. The 15-credit curriculum provides a foundation for ethical analysis of issues in clinical care, health policy, and biomedical research, as well as the ethical and social implications of emerging technologies.

The Certificate allows practicing professionals to explore ethical issues arising in their work and the social implications of advances in their fields. It enables graduate students to address issues associated with their primary academic or professional program. Within many programs, Certificate courses may serve as electives.

Admissions

Interested graduate or professional students enrolled in a University of Pittsburgh degree program, as well as  post-baccalaureate healthcare professionals and those working in relevant fields-including social work, chaplaincy, mental health, health law or policy, health-related research, and biotechnology or bioengineering-are invited to apply.

Prospective students are invited to contact the Certificate’s director at bioethics@pitt.edu to learn how to complete a Certificate Application for Admission to the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences.

Requirements for the Graduate Certificate


Following are the course requirements (15 credits) for the Graduate Certificate in Bioethics:

Two elective courses (6 credits) in Bioethics or related disciplines, of which one may be a Clinical Ethics Practicum
