PT Online MSW Program

Return to School of Social Work Return to: School of Social Work

The School of Social Work is proposing an online version of our existing part-time Masters in Social Work (MSW) program; a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), Board of Accreditation.

The School of Social Work has offered an MSW program since 1918 and has been accredited consistently since the end of that first year.  The MSW is a terminal professional degree that students earn by successfully completing 60 graduate credits (42 in-class credits and 18 credits earned in practicum).  Our MSW program offers two specializations, Direct Practice with Individuals, Families, and Small Groups (Direct Practice) or Community, Organization, and Social Action (COSA) and eight certificates:

  • DP Children Youth and Families
  • DP Gerontology
  • DP Home and School Visitor
  • DP Integrated Healthcare
  • DP Mental Health
  • COSA Human Services Management
  • COSA Gerontology
  • COSA Community Organizing and Practice Certificate

The proposed part-time Online MSW Program will offer our most popular specialization, Direct Practice with Individuals, Families, and Small Groups (Direct Practice) with the option for students to complete one of our three most popular certificates; these three certificates corresponding with the areas of projected growth in the profession:

  • DP Children Youth and Families
  • DP Integrated Healthcare
  • DP Mental Health

As with our face-to-face part-time course of study, there will be two types of students enrolled in the proposed Online MSW Program, Advanced Standing social work students, and Non-Advanced Standing social work students (terms utilized by our accreditation criteraia). Advanced Standing social work students are matriculating MSW students who have graduated from a CSWE-BOA accredited undergraduate social work program. Advanced Standing social work students are able to transfer-into their MSW degree up-to 21 credits earned by their successful completion of social work coursework from their undergraduate program. Advanced Standing social work students will complete our proposed part-time Online MSW Program in 6 consecutive semesters (year-round) of enrollment at six credits per semester.  Non-Advanced Standing social work students enter without the transfer credits and will complete their course of study in 10 consecutive semesters of enrollment (again, at six credits per semester). The proposed part-time Online MSW Program course of study is the same as our current part-time course of study delivered to students in our face-to-face program. Hence, we are experienced with delivering this curriculum.
