This program is a collaboration between the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences, Department Anthropology and the School of Public Health, Department of Behavioral and Community Health Sciences.  The MPH/PhD joint degree program prepares anthropologists for research, teaching, and program planning/evaluation for specialization in the cultural, social, and behavioral aspects of health and health care in either a domestic or international setting. This degree program prepares you for an academic career that encompasses the interdisciplinary competencies of anthropology and public health. 

The MPH/PhD joint degree is designed to be completed in four to five years including time for dissertation research. The BCHS requirements for the MPH/PhD joint degree are listed below.  Students should refer to the Department of Anthropology  for the most current PhD requirements.

  • 45 Public Health credits (6 credits of public health-relevant electives taken in Anthropology can be applied to the 45-credit requirement)
  • 78 total credits, including coursework, research and fieldwork
  • Practicum (The Anthropology fieldwork fulfills the MPH practicum requirement; students must submit SPH required documentation)
  • Essay or thesis (The Anthropology dissertation fulfills this requirement; students must submit SPH required documentation)

Total School of Public Health Credits: 45
