Requirements for the MA in Italian


A minimum of ten one-term courses is required. These courses will includeITAL 2710 - INTRODUCTION TO LITERARY AND CULTURAL THEORY  - ITAL 2903 - MA RESEARCH PAPER DIRECTED STUDY , and ITAL 2910 - COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATION MA  . Students holding Teaching Assistantships are also required to take ITAL 2970 - TEACHING OF ITALIAN , though this does not count toward the required ten. Candidates must also fulfill the following additional requirements:

  • Comprehensive Examination
    • The MA comprehensive examination is a two-component written examination consisting of a General Knowledge and a Field Exam and is given in on separate days during the second year of the MA program; an oral interview is held after completion of the exams to discuss the comprehensive exam results, as well as the student’s final project.
  • Final Project
    • Each candidate must complete a final faculty-guided project, selected by the student in consultation with the Italian faculty, and in alignment with their future plans beyond completion of the MA in Italian. Students may select from (but are not limited to) the following options:

•              Presentation on previously executed teaching demo (cluster or module consisting of multiple lessons, planned in consultation with appropriate faculty)

•              Syllabus development

•              Podcast

•              DH project

•              Annotated translation

•              Conference paper (with reflections on expansion)

•              Publishable article

  • Second Language
    • Candidates must demonstrate a reading knowledge of Latin or German or a Romance language other than Italian. Other languages will be considered upon petition.
  • Proposal/Overview (N/A)
  • Dissertation and Final Examination (N/A)
