Program Requirements
PhD students must complete coursework and research for a total of 72 credits. Attendance and participation in departmental seminars and journal clubs is required. During the first two years of study, students will take the majority of their coursework and have an opportunity to rotate in three different research laboratories. After the first year, students are expected to engage in independent research projects oriented towards their thesis research. Preliminary qualifying examinations for the PhD degree occur in the second year after all core courses have been taken. Students spend the remainder of the graduate program completing the research project and taking selected elective courses. Dissertation preparation and defense complete the PhD requirements.
