The joint juris doctor and master of public health in health policy and management (JD/MPH) program between Pitt Public Health and Pitt’s School of Law (LAW) provides students with an interdisciplinary curriculum in law and public health, integrating law, health policy, and management. The program emphasizes the relationship between the legal system and the protection and promotion of population health. Graduates are well prepared for careers at the intersection of law and public health, in government settings, private practice, health care institutions, and beyond.

JD/MPH students complete a 200-hour practicum in a practice-based, public health setting as well as an essay or thesis addressing a significant public health issue that uses empirical data and/or valid references to demonstrate their ability to critically examine and synthesize information from existing sources.  The JD/MPH joint degree is designed to be completed in four years of full-time study. The HPM requirements for the JD/MPH joint degree are summarized below. Students should refer to the School of Law  for the most current JD requirements. 

• 45 Public Health Credits (3 credits of public health-relevant electives taken in LAW can be applied to the 45-credit requirement)
• Practicum (200-hour minimum)
• Essay
• Note: Combined with LAW coursework/requirements, JD/MPH students complete a total of 121 credits
