Health Policy and Management, MHA/MBA

The MHA/MBA program offers students a competency-based curriculum and an array of professional development resources and activities to prepare graduates for managerial roles in a broad array of health industry settings. Uniting the strengths of the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Public Health and School of Business, the program builds 20 management competencies that serve as a foundation for ongoing career growth and professional development. Upon completion of the MHA/MBA program, our graduates obtain full-time employment, including post-graduate fellowships, in health industry organizations such as health systems, physician practices, durable medical equipment, biotechnology, pharmaceutical companies, health insurance plans, and consulting firms. The MHA/MBA also prepares graduates for specialized roles such as finance, human resources, marketing, strategy, etc.

Students must complete applications for, and be accepted into, both the School of Public Health and the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business. Application to Pitt Public Health must be submitted through SOPHAS at www.sophas.org. Application to the School of Business should be made at www.business.pitt.edu/katz/apply.

Our highly trained graduates will be fully prepared to assume fast-track leadership positions in a variety of health industry organizations. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that the demand for health industry managers will grow by 17 percent in the next decade. The U.S. health system is the largest industry in the United States, currently consuming nearly 18 percent of GDP. At the same time, there remain significant problems with access to care and quality of care. The joint training in business and health administration should provide a strong foundation for long-term career success.

The curriculum is a 73-credit course of study leading to the joint degree. The MHA/MBA can be completed within three years as a full-time student and five years as a part-time student. The competency-based curriculum emphasizes both professional and leadership development, as well as functional management skills, blending courses across both the School of Business (MBA) and Pitt Public Health’s Department of Health Policy and Management (MHA) in six academic terms.

Students are required to complete a management residency. These supervised placements in health industry organizations are an invaluable integrative experience that also provides many opportunities for professional development and networking. The student must complete applied management projects at the residency site.
