The emphasis of the MS in Environmental and Occupational Health (EOH) is directed towards the theoretical underpinnings of environmental health sciences and toxicology with more limited involvement in laboratory-based research. The program is designed as an integrated modern curriculum combining the training in the toxicological and environmental biophysics disciplines that are traditional to the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health with the new and continually developing fields of cellular and molecular pathobiology of environmental disease and gene environment interactions.
The program provides an understanding of how relevant environmental exposures, laboratory based model systems, and gene-environment responses can be interpreted and applied to the study of disease etiology in exposed and potentially exposed human populations.
The program typically takes approximately 2 years to complete. The requirements for the EOH MS degree are listed below.

Elective Courses
Students add electives from the list below to earn total credits required for the degree program. In situations where a student’s special interests or needs indicate an alternative course is more appropriate it may be substituted with the permission of the student’s academic advisor.
Other Requirements
Comprehensive Examination
The comprehensive examination must be scheduled for the end of the term prior to graduating term or the beginning of the graduating term and must be taken at least one month prior to the last day of the term in which the degree is to be conferred.
The format of the comprehensive examination is a written document consisting of the first draft of the thesis, including the introduction and methods. The written examination serves as a formal assessment of the student’s ability to formulate a substantive research question and address it through rigorous laboratory or non-laboratory analysis.
Oral Examination - Thesis Defense
The MS thesis defense consists of a final written thesis and an open oral examination.
The oral examination should be scheduled at least two weeks prior to the SPH deadline for the term. During the oral examination, the student will present their thesis research, and the committee will judge the adequacy of the research and its findings. A final copy of the written thesis must be submitted to the thesis committee at least one week before the oral examination.
