This joint program with the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Social Work prepares students to fulfill leadership roles in public health systems or academic settings with a particular focus on maternal and child health. Students in this program have opportunities to work with local organizations on a variety of planning, evaluation, and research activities.

Students are required to complete a 200-hour practicum in a public health setting and prepare an essay or thesis (fulfilled by the social work dissertation) that addresses an issue of public health significance and that demonstrates the ability to synthesize information from numerous sources. The MPH/PhD joint degree is designed to be completed in four to five years including time for dissertation research. The BCHS requirements for the MPH/PhD joint degree are listed below.  Students should refer to the School of Social Work  for the most current PhD requirements.

  • 45 Public Health Credits (6 credits of public health-relevant electives taken in Social Work can be applied to the 45-credit requirement)
  • 72 Total Credits
  • Practicum (200-hour minimum)
  • Essay or Thesis
