This program is a collaboration between the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences, Department Anthropology and the School of Public Health, Department of Behavioral and Community Health Sciences.  The MPH/PhD joint degree program prepares anthropologists for research, teaching, and program planning/evaluation for specialization in the cultural, social, and behavioral aspects of health and health care in either a domestic or international setting.

Students are required to complete a 200-hour practicum in a public health setting (Anthropology fieldwork fulfills this requirement) and prepare an essay or thesis (Anthropology dissertation fulfills this requirement) that addresses an issue of public health significance and that demonstrates the ability to synthesize information from numerous sources. The MPH/PhD joint degree is designed to be completed in four to five years including time for dissertation research. The BCHS requirements for the MPH/PhD joint degree are listed below. Students should refer to the Department of Anthropology  for the most current PhD requirements.

• 45 Public Health Credits (6 credits of public health-relevant electives taken in Anthropology can be applied to the 45-credit requirement)
• 87 Total Credits (reduction in total credits to 81 expected to be approved for AY 26-27)
• Practicum (200-hour minimum)
• Essay or Thesis
