The mission of the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine is to improve oral health through Teaching, Research, and Service. Teaching a new generation of clinicians to deliver oral health care with skill and compassion. Research that expands the boundaries of our knowledge and builds on discoveries to enhance human life. Service to the diverse community of patients who entrust themselves to our care.

The four-year DMD program prepares students to provide oral health care at the level of a general dentist, including health promotion and disease prevention, assessment and diagnosis, treatment planning, clinical care, and practice management. The competency-based curriculum also reflects the school’s commitment to supporting the development of professionalism and ethics, person-centered care, integration of the sciences, and evidence-based care and critical thinking.
