Fundamentals of Business Management Certificate

The Fundamentals of Business Management Certificate offered by Pitt Business provides students in the Dietrich School of Arts & Sciences, School of Computing and Information, and School of Public Health, an opportunity to supplement their major area of study with core business skills to better understand the companies they will enter upon graduation and to prepare them for possible managerial roles in those firms.

Consisting of 15 credits, the certicate develops foundational business skills in a student’s core discipline through experience-based learning activities and projects.  Those seeking the certificate will explore the core structure of a business and basic people management skills such as hiring and paying employment.

Program Description

The certificate consists of 15 credits:  two required (6 credits) courses offered by the business school (students will choose two of three courses); one elective course from the business school from a list of  BUSERV courses and other approved classes; one elective course from the student’s home school in the student’s chosen discipline; and one project-based course (3 credits) from either the student’s home school or the business school with the approval of the home school advisor

Certificate Curriculum Summary


The proposed certificate consists of five courses totaling 15 credits:  two required (6 credits) courses offered by the business school (students will choose two of three courses); one elective course from the business school from a list of  BUSERV courses and other approved classes (3 credits); one elective course from the student’s home school in the student’s chosen discipline (1-3 credits); and one project-based course or internship (1-3 credits) from either the student’s home school or the business school with the approval of the home school advisor.  All courses must be completed with a “C” or better to be applied to certificate requirements.

Choose 1 of the following Elective Courses from Student’s Home School (1-3 credits)
