Aquatics Minor

The University of Pittsburgh Aquatic 15-credit minor prepares students to earn certifications and gain experience that permits them to work in pool and aquatic-related settings. Through the minor curriculum, students can earn certifications as Instructors for the American Red Cross in the following areas: Lifeguarding, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), automated exerternal defibrillation (AED), first aid, water safety, and safety training for swim coaches, in addition to Certified Pool Operator (CPO). The minor also provides practicum and teaching opportunities in the areas of beginning, intermediate, and advanced swimming instruction, swimming coaching, and aquatic-related classes (ie. Paddleboard yoga, aquatic exercise, etc.. ). In addition, the aquatic minor provides ancillary training for professionals in the areas of exercise physiology, physical or recreational therapy, and fitness trainors who are required to work in pool-related settings.
Certifications are mandatory requirements for aquatic-related positions. Following completion, the Aquatic minor will certify students in American Red Cross Instructor courses (Water Safety, Lifeguard, and CPR/First Aid). The minor will also provide opportunity to pursue the Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification as well as United States Swimming Safety Training for Swim Coaches and other coaching certifications.
