Exercise Science Minor


The University of Pittsburgh Exercise Science 17 credit minor program focuses on exposure to the science and physiology of exercise and competencies related to exercise presciption and programming. The Exercise Science minor prepares students to apply skills developed around fitness testing, assessment, instruction, and training for positions in health fitness settings, performance centers, fitness studios, or recreational centers.  The Exercise Science minor also provides ancillary training for students desiring to enter graduate or professional programs in related fields (i.e. physical therapy, occupational therapy, nutrition and dietetics, physician assistant, chiropractic school, medical school, public health, and other allied-health professions).

The Exercise Science minor enables students, upon completion, to be eligible to sit for certification exams offered by professional agencies such as American College of Sports Medicine or National Strength and Conditioning Association. 

Admissions Requirements


  • Students must have a 2.0 cumulative GPA to declare the minor.
  • Students must have a declared major at the University of Pittsburgh. 
  • There are no pre-requisite courses required for the minor. 

A maximum of 6 credit hours of education coursework may be transferred from another institution with Program Coordinator approval.

Graduation Requirements


  • Students must earn a C- or higher in a class for it to satisfy minor requirements.
  • The minor GPA requirement to graduate is 2.0.
