Sustainability Certificate
|
|
The aim of the Undergraduate Certificate in Sustainability is to provide undergraduates the opportunity to enhance their education by including sustainability in their course of study. This certificate program in “Sustainability” transcends existing Schools and Departments at the University of Pittsburgh, capitalizes on ongoing Sustainability-growth opportunities in teaching and research at the University of Pittsburgh, and utilizes the framework of the Mascaro Center for Sustainable Innovation (MCSI) to execute the certificate.
The objectives of the Undergraduate Sustainability Certificate are:
- To develop the basic competencies needed by science, engineering, and humanities graduates to contribute quickly and effectively to the development and ultimate use of sustainable technologies, science, and practices in the U.S. and abroad,
- To create opportunities for undergraduates to develop analytical skills and to learn to think critically about sustainability,
- To provide undergraduates the opportunity to seamlessly incorporate sustainability into their course of study, and
- To create a benchmark education program that can serve as a model throughout academia.

Requirements
A total of 18 credits are required to earn a certificate that is structured so that the participating student will be exposed to the interrelation of engineering with natural and social sciences and humanities as applied to sustainable Earth systems, engineering practices, and society. The certificate has two general tracks: one in the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences (DSAS) and the other in the Swanson School of Engineering (SSOE). However, students from outside of these respective schools are able to participate in a track. General guidelines are as follows:
- Each track starts and finishes with two required courses with a MCSI designation in the SSOE. These two courses unite all Sustainability Certificate students regardless of disciplinary or School affiliation.
- Students will take a third required course that is specific to the track School.
- Three electives can be chosen to complete the 18-credit requirement.
- At most, only one of these three electives can be taken in a student’s home Department. (For example, an Environmental Science student can only count one course with the GEOL designation as an elective course.)
Electives:
Use the list below to select three electives. Students may seek approval of other electives by asking the Program Director, whose contact info. is listed above. Only one elective can be in the student’s major department.*
