Disability Studies Certificate

This certificate will foster interdisciplinary and innovative project-based work and will support students who wish to use the perspective of disability in their academic and professional work. Certificate students will

  • Learn and critically investigate various models of understanding disability, including the social model, identity model, cultural model, human rights model, and others.
  • Explore the ethical dimensions and responsibilities of representing people with disabilities in expressive forms including writing, film and television media, theater arts, music, and more. • Analyze a variety of social, cultural, historical, and personal issues using key concepts from the cultural and social construction of disability.
  • Identify barriers to access for people with disabilities, including environmental, attitudinal, policy, and social barriers.
  • Develop strategies for increasing accessibility in a variety of public, professional, and institutional settings.
  • Use a variety of adaptive strategies for including people with disabilities in creative pursuits, such as film, music, and theater. • Advocate for social, legal, educational, and other concerns impacting populations with disabilities.
  • Examine the intersection of disability and other identity and cultural constructs, including gender, sexuality, race, and others.

The structure of the certificate is flexible so that students can customize a path of study to fit their needs, but the number of courses students can take in one department are limited so that they explore several perspectives on Disability Studies. Students will be able to count the internship or independent study courses in their majors (with permission of the director).
