Industrial Engineering Concentrations

The undergraduate program in Industrial Engineering provides a choice of areas of emphasis as listed below. Those students wishing to complete a Concentration in one of these areas must take three out of their five required technical electives in that area. Students are not required to select an area of focus and those wishing to gain a breadth of experience may choose to take a series of courses from two or more of the areas.

Courses related to each area are listed below. Students may petition the undergraduate committee to take a course outside of the IE Department that fulfills the academic intent of the concentration of interest. For example, courses in Mechanical Engineering may be suitable for the Product Development and Manufacturing Systems concentration and courses in the College of Business Administration may be suitable for the Engineering Management Concentration. Permission will be granted on a case-by-case basis. In addition, top academic students may take a graduate level course within the IE Department with the approval of their advisor and the course instructor.

Note that while we permit students to earn two concentrations, this can only be done with a minimum of 5 technical elective courses (thus students may double count a maximum of one course that might cross concentration areas).

Customized Research

The Customized Research Concentration requires at least 3 credits of IE 1098 - SPECIAL PROJECTS  in which a student conducts research under a faculty member’s supervision.  A research report fulfills the requirements for this course.  For students in the EAGr program (i.e., 4+1 program) taking graduate credits, those 3 credits could be IE 2997 - RESEARCH, M. S.  with the approval of the graduate coordinator.  The other 6 credits will be from two technical elective courses chosen in consultation with the faculty member that must be related to the specific research project undertaken.  Students are encouraged to take IE courses; the advisor may approve courses outside of IE.

Required

At least 3 credits of research courses are required.

Electives

Up to two elective courses (6 credits) can be taken. In consultation with the research advisor, students take up to 6 credits of electives.  Any of the following courses are approved, but a student may select courses from other programs subject to the advisor’s approval.

Note:

These course lists are subject to change as technical elective offerings within and external to the department change over time or are removed from the catalog, and as additional courses are approved.  They will be periodically revisited and updated by the undergraduate program coordinator.
