Advances in genomic technology have the potential to benefit patients and their families and will likely provide novel approaches to the management and treatment of genetic conditions. Since the early days of clinical genetics, ethical challenges relating to the use of genetics emerged and will continue to persist as technological advances continue to impact clinical care. This course provides an opportunity to explore ethical challenges in clinical genetics and genetic counseling and to examine these issues within the context of genetic counseling practice. Throughout the course a broad range of historical, contemporary, and emerging ethical issues in genetics are addressed. The format of the course includes lectures, discussions, and group work to provide a framework for analyzing arguments in the literature and to encourage students to assume responsibility for engaging in ethical analysis as they enter the genetic counseling profession.
