PIA 2522 - CLIMATE POLICY - LOCAL & GLOBAL

Minimum Credits: 3
Maximum Credits: 3
We examine strategies at the local, national and international level to address the climate emergency and to transition to more sustainable and equitable economies. We discuss how local governments and state governments and countries across the globe, despite the significant challenges, have made concrete advancements. These include the growing deployment of energy efficiency renewable energy and storage, which are cost-competitive, resilient and reliable; and private and public investments into green R&D, jobs and renewable energy, so that countries can compete in the green global economy, and the population can benefit from good quality jobs and community ownership of renewable energy projects. We examine the policy tools to incentivize the shift of taxpayer and investors funds from the fossil fuel sector to the renewable energy sector, including mandating climate risks disclosure for financial institutions and climate litigation to hold governments and fossil companies to account. We also examine how public investments are assisting the just transition of fossil fuel workers and communities. We draw on the experience of countries that have made notable shifts to green energy, including China and Germany, and US states such as California and Texas. Finally, we discuss efforts to counter climate misinformation and false solutions and to counter the suppression of climate research, knowledge and advocacy. This course meets the requirements for the Sustainable Development Certificate, Sustainable Engineering Certificate, and Global Health Certificate, Area and Regional Certificates and other programs.
