ENGCMP 1551 - HISTORY AND POLITICS OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

This course introduces students to the history, politics, and diversity of the English language. Drawing on linguistics, rhetoric, and cultural studies, students will examine how English has changed over time and continues to evolve in the United States and globally. The course investigates language diversity - including global, translingual, and pidgin Englishes and creoles - and explores how assumptions about “correct” English are shaped by and reinforce structures of power and privilege. Students will examine the intersections of language with race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality, religion, and nationality, and will consider the implications of standard language ideology for education, policy, and social justice. Through reading, research, and writing, students will develop their own informed positions on questions of linguistic justice.
