ENGCMP 1220 - THE ART OF THE ESSAY

Minimum Credits: 3
Maximum Credits: 3
Long Description What do you want to write about? This course invites you to encounter the world as an essayist: to write about what you find mysteriously beautiful, what troubles or delights you, to draw on your experience and expertise, your questions and confusions. Through close reading of accomplished essayists and frequent writing of your own, you will explore the essay in its many forms: portrait, list, meditation, argument, complaint, and flash. You will experiment with description and image, humor, seriousness, sentences, and sound. Workshop is central to the course: you will share your work with the class, ask questions about your own writing, and develop your ability to read and respond to the work of your peers. This is a course that asks you to be thoughtful, but also imaginative and playful, as you search for your subjects and find your voice as an essayist.
