This didactic course explores the evidence base for the evaluation, diagnosis and management of common psychiatric-mental health issues across the lifespan. Emphasis in on (1) current understanding of the etiology, including the genetic basis, of psychiatric illnesses; (2) evaluation and diagnosis of individuals presenting with psychiatric-mental health symptoms; (3) recognizing problems that can be managed in a primary care setting and those that need to be referred for psychiatric evaluation and care; (4) ongoing management of psychiatric-mental health problems in primary care including management in collaboration with psychiatry; and (5) the impact of mental health problems from a family perspective.
