CHIN 0177 - SAVORING THE LANGUAGE IN CHINESE FOOD CULTURE Minimum Credits: 3 Maximum Credits: 3 The course introduces students to linguistic inquiries in topics related to Chinese food and food culture. The course content includes the following: (1) Food naming in Chinese culture and polysemy in words associated with food; (2) conceptual metaphors in Chinese associated with food, food texture, taste, cooking method, etc.; (3) issues in language borrowing, transliteration, and translation; (4) sociolinguistic issues including pragmatic competence in the Chinese food culture and speech analysis in food related text. Students will also perform other linguistic analysis on culture product and texts associated with food (culture) in China, including conducting analysis of semiotics, dialects, and cross-cultural comparisons.
