BIOSC 1810 - MACROMOLECULAR STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION Minimum Credits: 3 Maximum Credits: 3 This course is concerned primarily with the structure and functions of proteins and nucleic acids. These are large polymers where structure and function are determined by the sequence of monomeric units. Topics will include the physical and chemical properties of the monomer units (amino acids/nucleotides); the determination of the linear sequence of these units; analyses of the three-dimensional structures of the macromolecules; kinetics and mechanisms of enzyme catalyzed reactions, including RNA enzymes; regulation of enzyme activity; molecular recognition; and fidelity of protein synthesis. Emphasis throughout will be on experimental methods, molecular mechanisms and problem solving.
