PIA 2164 - NATURAL RESOURCES GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT Minimum Credits: 3 Maximum Credits: 3 This course considers how institutions influence resource and environmental outcomes. In particular, this course will focus on how the design of property rights influences prospects for effective management of resources such as energy, water, and biodiversity. Although the problem of resource management is complex, we will study how the structure of property rights, the rules governing ownership in society, provides a framework to understand when societies succeed and fail in their effort to manage resources effectively. In a general sense, the course will show why property rights, and the political institutions within which property rights are specified and enforced, are the key to understanding the extent to which societies are able to manage natural resources effectively.
