BIOSC 1445 - ANIMAL COMMUNICATIONMinimum Credits: 3 Maximum Credits: 3 This course addresses the extraordinary variety of ways that animals communicate with each other. We explore how animals produce and receive signals using sound, light, chemicals, mechanical pressure, and electricity. We then approach how such signals evolve by considering questions of optimality, decision making, information theory, and economics. We discuss the contexts in which signals are used, including aggression and dominance, mate attraction and courtship, cooperation and social signaling, and foraging. We conclude by extending to humans, plants, and microbes.
