ADMPS 2054 - ORGANIZATION AND MANAGEMENT 2

This is the second of a two course sequence for MED students in the higher education management specialization. This course explores management theories and practices relevant to higher education, and affords them practical application as seen through the lens of working professionals, first- and second-line supervisors. The course examines management style and practices to help students discern which have a higher probability of succeeding within a postsecondary school environment. Course topics devote special attention to self-management, collaborative processes, academic and student support services, and human resource and financial management practices. Students will become acquainted with basic functions relating to hiring, motivating, training and promoting staff, while developing capabilities to design measurable performance objectives and evaluate staff on that basis. Basic employment and labor law and related regulatory compliance issues will receive coverage. In addition, the course will explore the role of supervisors in budget creation and resource management within a broader functional and institutional context.
