AFRCNA 0615 - BLACK LITERATUREMinimum Credits: 3 Maximum Credits: 3 This course focuses on writers from three major periods in black literature; pre-Civil War (the slave narratives), Harlem Renaissance (when writers such as Langston Hughes were changing the nature of black writing), and the contemporary period. We will consider the relationship of social history and literature; the insights these writers furnish us about black consciousness, the black self, black perception and the black vision; and the distinctive qualities of black literary and cultural traditions.
