MUSIC 1272 - SP TPCS CRSE OPRA CULT FEELINGMinimum Credits: 3 Maximum Credits: 3 Opera as a genre emerged at a junction between the pre-modern and modern notions of self, and has since remained a vital site for the exploration of the limits of self-perception and self-expression. Focusing on the ways the changing notions of feeling informed operatic articulations of personhood, gender, class and ethnicity, this course will explore some representative operas from the early 17th through the late 20th centuries. Bringing into play a variety of primary and secondary sources, we will tackle at least one new opera, and one new approach, each week.
