AFRCNA 0540 - SWAHILI 1Minimum Credits: 3 Maximum Credits: 3 This course introduces students to Kiswahili (Swahili), a language that unites a vibrant community of more than 200 million speakers across East and Central Africa and elsewhere around the world. In this proficiency-oriented course, students will explore the basic sound patterns of the language, its fundamental sentence patterns, and basic vocabulary, forming a solid foundation for speaking, listening, writing, and reading skills in Kiswahili. Emphasis is placed on communication and the cultural context within which Kiswahili is used. Classes are interactive and engaging, and emphasize the use of language as a tool for real-life communication skills. Students will be provided many opportunities to practice and use Kiswahili in meaningful contexts and to interact with authentic materials like music, movies, and print media. By the end of this course, students should be able to understand and use basic words, memorized phrases, and simple sentences, ask and answer simple yes/no questions and some simple information questions, and engage in simple, slow-paced conversations about topics regularly encountered in daily life.
