Long Description This course is a continuation of SWAHIL 0100: Swahili 1, intended to introduce the language's basic communicative situations and basic vocabulary and grammar. This course will help you expand your vocabulary and grammar, and to express yourself creatively in both spoken and written Swahili (Kiswahili). This course aims also at promoting the practical application of the skills learned in class in self-expression, description of everyday experience as well as enhancement of interpersonal interaction. The course uses mostly East African texts (reading passages, music, and videos) to promote students' understanding and appreciation of the Swahili language and culture. While the main focus will be on enriching the student's knowledge of African culture through Swahili learning, students are expected to relate the culture they are learning with their everyday experiences. Being able to communicate in Swahili, a language that unites a vibrant community of more than 200 million speakers across East and Central Africa and in the diaspora around the world, is beneficial in many careers, including international affairs and diplomacy; public health, medicine, and nursing; finance and financial services; information and communications technology; and international business and trade. Knowledge of language and culture can also complement the study of other Bantu languages (such as Zulu, Xhosa, and Shona), French, Portuguese, and Arabic; anthropology; traditional African dance, music, and art; Africana Studies and African history; and other related areas.
