Minimum Credits: 3
Maximum Credits: 3
Long Description In a few short decades, digital technologies have visibly transformed nearly every aspect of our lives, including gender and sexuality; yet traditional patterns of power and social inequality still pervade our newly pixelated reality. This course introduces key concepts from the field of Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies to provide students with a rich toolkit to better analyze the digital technologies that they encounter every day. For example, topics may include: gender bias in AI; LGBTQIA+ experiences with dating/hookup apps; sexual objectification of women in videogames; Gamergate; generational norms regarding nudes/sexting; non-consensual image sharing; body-checking and self-perception; incels and looksmaxxing communities; OnlyFans and post-pandemic sex work; and more. Students will deepen their understanding of course concepts through creative projects employing social-media-based tools (e.g., video reels, meme images, podcasts) and receive support and training with digital production tools.
