Long Description This course examines the development of experimental cinema beginning in Europe in the 1920s with dada and surrealist films by Marcel Duchamp, Luis Bunuel and others, and continuing in the U.S. and elsewhere after World War II. The films, many of which are non-narrative and some of which are "abstract", will be examined for the ways in which cinema is used for the filmmakers' personal expression. Consideration will be given to the artistic and cultural contexts in which the films were made, and comparisons will be made with other media, especially painting and sculpture.
